Episode Pack 2 release

Episodes 1 through 6 are now available! A total of 12 episodes of 13 questions each is planned for release over the course of this project. The Web version is automatically updated. For existing users of other platforms, please download the updated version.

Russian localization

A Russian localization of this game is underway by The Box! Visit their website for links to their official Discord, vKontakte, YouTube, and Boosty (donations) account.

The role of Candy Barre will be played by Maria Grasse (Мария Грассе), who previously voiced the host in their translation of FixyText.

• 8 question types!
  • Standard — 4 choices, only one of which is right. If you answer right, you win money! If you answer wrong, you hear a zinger from the host. And lose money.
  • Candy Trivia — Worth a bit more! The question is about candy, or a dumb joke on the back of a wrapper.
  • Sorta Kinda — Quickly sort 7 items into one of two categories, sometimes even both of them!
  • All Outta Salt — The host gives you a silly phrase, whose syllables rhyme* with another more popular phrase. Buzz in quickly for more cash, but if you’re stumped, wait for the three clues.
    *Phrases may not perfectly rhyme in your accent.
  • Thousand-Question Question — Starts at 1000 times the normal prize! But with every bit of time that passes, the prize whittles down to zero. Only the first one to get it right will win the money.
  • Rage Against the Times — Ozzy, “our resident squatter”, is an old man who’s always angry about one thing or another. Find out why he’s mad this time. (Added in Episode Pack 1)
  • Big Brain Storming — The brainstorming exercise went too far without an entertaining question. From three possible association chains, figure out the common starting point. (New in Episode Pack 2)
  • Sugar Rush — A spooky speed round where you select only the options that match a description, based on the topic given at the start of the round.
  • Like It or Leave It — An action-packed final round where you “Like” items that match a clue, but “Leave” everything else. There are 4 items, the last of which changes with every clue!

Platforms

Salty Trivia is available on the following platforms:

Browser - Play live on itch.io. This option is not as performant as the others, but is compatible with the most devices.

Windows executable - Play as a standalone application on your Windows computer. No need to install, just download, extract, and run.

Linux executable - Play as a standalone application on your Linux computer. No need to install, just download, extract, and run. If you don’t have the option to run it, go to file properties and turn on the “execute” permission.

Steam Deck - Since Steam Deck runs on a version of Linux, it can natively run the Linux release of Salty Trivia!

Android app - Install the .APK file as an app on your Android phone. (You will need to enable “Install from unknown sources” for this.)

Amazon Fire TV - Since Fire TV runs on a version of Android TV, you can also install the .APK file as an app there. Get it on Amazon Appstore!

Control schemes

Up to 8 contestants can play, mixing-and-matching the following control schemes:

• Phones as controllers!
• 2 players share a game controller
• 4 players huddle up on a keyboard
• 1 player using the mouse or touchscreen
• 1 player using the Amazon Fire TV remote (when running on an Amazon Fire TV)

Up to 100 audience members can play along and have their score tracked.

Notes

The gameplay is based mainly on the You Don’t Know Jack series of games, as well as other trivia games. If you like this game, please support Jackbox Games’ official releases such as Jackbox Party Pack 1 and Pack 5. (Although if you’re here, you’re probably already a superfan, or a Jackbox Games lawyer preparing to send me a DMCA).

Salty Trivia with Candy Barre is released as free and open source software.

• “Free”: Not only is the game free (gratis) to play, you are free (libre) to 0) run the program, 1) study and modify the game’s files as you want, 2) reupload and distribute copies of the program, and 3) distribute copies of your modified programs.
• “Open source”: To achieve the first and third freedoms, the game’s code is open-source, which means all the code that makes up the game is available to see, copy, and modify online (on GitLab in this case). In addition, it uses the Godot game engine, which is similarly free and open source.

However, there are some restrictions. You may not use the code to impersonate us, or otherwise scam people. The recordings of our voices are available for ease of modification, but if you release a modification, you must replace all the provided voice files. In other words, the code is FOSS, but our branding and voices are not Creative Commons.
